Education Seminar Provides A Vision For The Future

As part of the ongoing process of raising the educational standards within rural and urban areas in developing countries such as Pakistan, a seminar was held in Attowala, Tehsil Kharian on Sunday 30th November. The seminar brought together educationalists from various sectors of society, both the private and public sector, with a variance of experiences and viewpoints. They highlighted the need for our communities to work together in order to resolve the common problems within our education system, and to work towards medium-long term solutions in the region.

Issues highlighted included the fact there was a :-

  • lack of coordination between the various public and private stakeholders
  • lack of resources and facilities
  • lack of uniformity in planning, management and syllabuses
  • lack of teachers
  • lack of general focus
  • the dichotomy between homegrown and foreign curricula, and between English and urdu medium syllabi
  • separate paths adopted by secular and religious educational institutions – there needs to be more convergence
  • lack of training
  • poor governance, corruption and mismanagement
  • lack of female role model teachers and institutes
  • lack of support and focus from within the community to raise literacy rates
  • there needs to be more cooperation between individuals, the community and stakeholders
  • there needs to be a medium-long strategy and plan for the region
  • greater teacher-parent-student interaction and involvement

Unfortunately no government representative was able to attend in order to provide invaluable insight into their policies and strategies for improving education within our nation, however, Thinkers Forum, will continue to engage with them in a cooperative manner so that they may become involved in such future seminars and activities, and realize the importance of improving the education system within our nation.

It was agreed that all participants would work together to build upon this pioneering initiative, as raising the educational standards was the only way to improve the intellectual, spiritual and socio-economic state of our communities and the nation. There was no short-cut route for the success of our nation, it was only possible through improving the education standards by mutual cooperation in a non-partisan, non-sectarian manner.

Further initiatives of this kind will be initiated by Thinkers Forum and its non-political and political partners, in the long term commitment to build a knowledge based society within Pakistan and other Muslim nations so that we become a beacon of light for the world.
