Girl Guides & Scouts - Developing Youth Potential

Thinkers Forum Muslim Girl Scouts & Guides

Girl guiding & scouting enables girls and young women to develop their full potential through a varied range of events and activities that challenge, inform and stimulate. It remains as relevant and popular now as it was when the organisation began almost 100 years ago. The movement aims to help girls develop potentials as individuals and prepare them into useful and caring citizens of the country. Girl Guides or Girl Scouts is a parallel movement to Scouting.

Mission

• To enable girls and young women to develop their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world

The Movement’s strength lies in the millions of girls and young women it serves and the impact they have amongst their friends, their families and the wider communities in which they live.
Girls guides is open to all, regardless of race or creed

Fun, With A Purpose

  • Through recreation, Girls guides achieves its purpose to help young people develop physically, intellectually, socially and spiritually so that youth may take a constructive place in society.
  • This is achieved through non-formal education with emphasis on practical activities in the outdoors.
  • Currently Scouting and Guiding have over 38 million members in 217 countries and territories represented through several different Scouting associations at the international level.

What is Scouting?

  • Scouting is the largest faith based global youth movement, in almost every county in the world. There are ~9 million Muslim Scouts world-wide.
  • Scouting provides adults and young people with the adventure of a life time. Scouting helps develop personal skills, leadership, team work and friendships. There is a lot to learn in a fun and disciplined environment.
  • Camping plays a major part in both the Scouts programmes with regular camps across the year.
  • Beavers/Rainbows, Cubs/Brownies, Scouts/Guides & Explorers/Rangers are open to all females.
  • Children of all faiths and backgrounds are welcome.

Education for Life

Girls guides/scouts complements the school and the family, filling the needs not met by either. Girls guides/scouts develops self-knowledge, the need to explore, to discover, to want to know in a faith based environment.  Girls guides discover the world beyond the classroom, tapping the skills of others to learn, and passing that Knowledge on to others.

Adventurous Activities

  • The Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities. Being outdoors is important and much of the programme will be given over to traditional Scout activities, such as camping, outdoor cooking and survival.
  • The highlight is our annual summer camp with other Muslim Groups from across the UK.
  • There are also opportunities for more adventurous activities such as night hikes, canoeing, archery and climbing.
  • Community participation and involvement in global issues is encouraged such as poverty alleviation, environmental protection, climate change and other local concerns.
  • Participation, rather than meeting set standards is promoted amongst the Scouts and Girl Guides.
  • There is also a wide range of activity badges and Challenge Awards for Scouts.

The Scout Law embodies the joint values of the Scouting movement all over the world which binds all Scouts together. The emphasis on "Learning by doing" provides experiences and hands on orientation as a practical method of learning and confidence building. Small groups build unity and a brotherly atmosphere to develop responsibility, character, self-reliance and self-confidence, reliability, and readiness; which eventually leads to collaboration and leadership. A program of attractive varying activities expands a Scouts' horizons and bonds the Scout even more to the group. Activities and games develop handiness and provides a fun way to develop skills. In an outdoor setting, these also provide contact with nature and the environment.

Different organisations vary on the precise groupings, but most of
them offer Scouting and Guiding from the ages of 6 to 25, in one
form or another.

Scouting age groups complement guides and include :-

  • Beavers          (6-8 yrs)

  • Scouts            (10.5-14 yrs)
  • Explorers       (14-18 yrs)
  • Networks       (19 –25 yrs)

The Scout & Guides Group

  • The Group is a registered charity and financially self-supporting.  Our money comes from members subscriptions, and from the hard work of our fundraising team and donations.
  • The Leaders are all volunteers.  Training and selection is overseen by The Scout/Girl Guides Association to ensure their suitability and competence.
  • Training includes First Aid, child safety, programme planning and camp leadership.
  • All adult Leaders and Helpers pass a Criminal Records Bureau check to ensure their suitability.
  • The active participation of all parents in these activities is essential if the Group is to be able to pay its way and continue to thrive.
  • The Group Executive Committee, which comprises of parents, supporters and Leaders, is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Group. We need your help to support the Executive. You can commit from a few hours a month to as many hours as you can.

Other Opportunities

As a Scout/Girl Guides Group we rely heavily on volunteer Leaders to run most of the Group. Parents and supporters can make a big difference with any spare time they have.
