Impact of climate change on the Muslim world

Impact of climate change on the Muslim world will be devastating

Climate Change will affect everyone, but Muslim countries such as Bangladesh, Senegal, Mauritania and Tajikistan will face disaster as the planet heats up.

If effective action is not taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the impact of climate change in Bangladesh is predicted to be devastating:

  • Melting glaciers in the Himalayas will result in higher water run off
Rising sea levels will result in flooding
  • Higher sea temperatures are likely to make cyclones worse
  • If sea levels rise by 100cm, it will reduce Bangladesh’s land area by 20% which would potentially affect over 100 million people either through loss of land, livelihood or life.

The effects of climate change in Senegal and Mauritania are also predicted to be disastrous:

  • Rainfall is predicted to fall by 20%
  • The lack of rain will lead to crop failures, which could lead to a 50% reduction of agricultural produce
  • These already fragile economies will be much weakened, as the fall in agricultural production will lead to a fall in export revenue from produce, such as ground nuts.

It is largely the rich countries that are responsible for the carbon emissions which are causing climate change, but the poorest countries, like Bangladesh, will be affected hardest and first. This global inequality is shameful and individuals and governments should act now to stop the disastrous consequences of climate change.

Climate change is a global challenge that impacts on Muslim countries around the world, particularly through devastating floods or drought. It is crucial that people come together to take personal and political action so that we achieve climate justice.

Thinkers Forum along with like-minded indivduals and partners are calling on all governments to take action which will lead to major changes in our economy and society to avert the worst affects of climate change.
