Conference of Environment Ministers



Dec 2006: Press Release - Day two of Second Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers

 

Dr. Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, Director General of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization -ISESCO-, submitted three reports relating to ISESCO's efforts and proposals in the fields of water resources management, environment protection and population education and health, and renewable energies to the Second Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers, which opened yesterday morning at Jeddah Conference Palace.

 

Also, the Director General presented, in the second working session of the Conference, the document on the "Broad Lines of the Draft Strategy for Sustainable Development in the Islamic World", which was laid down by the Islamic Organization.

 

The Conference adopted the Report of the Director General on ISESCO's efforts in the field of Environment Protection, Health and Population Education, taking into consideration the observations made by the Conference members, and praised the Organization's efforts in this respect.

 

It also called upon the Director General to double efforts in the fields of environment protection, health and population education, in coordination and consultation with Member States as well as the competent national, regional and international bodies.

 

The Conference also adopted the Report of the Director General on ISESCO's efforts and proposals in the field of water resources management, taking into consideration the observations made by the conference members, and praised the Organization's efforts in this respect.

 

It called upon the Member States to further cooperate with ISESCO so as to develop water resources management mechanisms and improve the action of the relevant institutions and bodies, in accordance with Members States' needs, priorities and general policies.

 

The Conference also invited the Director General to present a report on the efforts of ISESCO in the field of water resources management to the coming sessions of the Conference.

 

Also, the Conference adopted the Report of the Director General on ISESCO's in the field of renewable energy, taking into consideration the observations made by the Conference members, and praised the Organization's efforts in this respect.

 

It stressed the need to devote further attention to the issues of renewable energies, and to foster their utilization in the Member States in the vital fields and for development purposes.

 

The Director General was invited by the Conference to present a report on the Organization's efforts in renewable energies to the coming sessions of the Conference.

 

The Conference adopted the Document on the 'Broad Lines of the Draft Strategy for Sustainable Development in the Islamic World', taking into consideration the observations made by the Conference Members. It commended as well as the efforts made by the Islamic Organization in this connection, and called upon the Director General to prepare a draft strategy for sustainable development in the Islamic world and its implementation mechanisms, and to refer it to the third session of the Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers.

 

The Conference also called upon Member States to provide ISESCO with their relevant national plans and reference strategies, in order to take their contents into consideration in the elaboration of the draft strategy for sustainable development in the Islamic world and its implementation mechanisms.
